Here's my entry in the LLMD Challenge. It was my turn today to
buy candy for work so I bought a bag of those conversation hearts
... fortunately, no one there asked me why I was looking at all the
hearts and writing down what they said.

sappy.

Conversation

by Katrina Bowen

Blair looked up in amusement at the distinctive, stiff rustling of a cellophane bag. "How much of that stuff are you going to eat, anyway?"

"I'm not eating it, Chief. I'm reading it." Jim leaned against the back of the couch and continued sorting through the candy hearts.

Shaking his head, Blair turned back to his computer. "You know, Jim, we have books. Newspapers, magazines ... plenty of stuff to read. I can't imagine those things have much of a plotline to keep your mind occupied."

Jim ignored him. Holding a green heart up to his eyes, he said, "*E-mail me*? Since when do these things say *E-mail me*?"

"Welcome to the nineties, man." Reaching back, Blair plucked the heart out of Jim's hand and popped it into his mouth. As he chewed, he started shuffling through his notes. "It's all part of modern romance."

"Very funny. Here."

Blair picked up the heart Jim dropped on his computer. *For you*. Laughing, he set it aside. "Thanks, Jim. I'll just save this for later, okay? Don't want to spoil my appetite for supper." Another heart landed in front of him. *Sure love*. Blair looked up at Jim, eyebrows raised.

Jim grinned and sat down beside Blair, settling close to the smaller man. Reaching over, he took Blair's hand and pressed a third heart into his palm. Blair uncurled his fingers and looked down. *Cutie pie*. He smiled in spite of himself. "Are you going to keep this up all day?"

Jim released Blair's hand to sort through the candies he had taken out of the bag. Selecting one, he gave it to Blair. *Why not?*

Closing his file, Blair took off his glasses and leaned back into the cushions, shifting position to face Jim. "Okay, big guy. Just what do think you're going to get out of this?" Jim kept his face expressionless as he handed the next heart to Blair. *You're tops*. Blair laughed and put it next to the others. "In your *dreams*. You know, Jim, you've got a really peculiar idea of small talk ..." Blair trailed off as Jim held another heart up. *One I love.*

Blair felt his breath catch in his throat. "Oh ... Jim, I --" Pressing a finger to Blair's lips, Jim put two hearts in his hand. *Be mine* and *For keeps*.

Unable to say anything, Blair stared at the palm of his hand, reading the messages there. Jim leaned even closer and held up last heart in front of Blair's eyes. *Say yes*.

When he still didn't answer, Jim placed the heart with the other two Blair was still holding. Gently cupping Blair's face in his hands, Jim bent forward, pressing his lips tenderly against Blair's eyes, Blair's mouth. He heard the sound of the hearts being placed carefully on the coffee table, and he felt Blair's hands slide up to his shoulders ... and he tasted Blair's answer.
